Soroptimist International Fledging Club, Uyo has marked the International Day of the Girl-Child in Essien Itiaba Community Secondary School, Ikot Asua, Nsit Atai Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State.
Soroptimist International has spread over 120 countries
Soroptimist International (SI) was founded in 1921 in Oakland – California, as a service organisation for women, and currently Soroptimist Clubs are spread over 122 countries of the world.
SI is a worldwide volunteer service organisation for women who work for peace with a clear vision to educate, empower and transform the lives of women and girls in local communities and the world over.
According to the Club, International Day of the Girl Child is an international observance day declared by the United Nations.
The special day mapped out to celebrate the girls Child is also called the Day of Girls and the International Day of the Girl.
This unique day is celebrated every year on 11 October. For the year 2021, the event will took place on Monday, 11 October, 2021with the Theme: “Digital Generation, Our Generation”.
Addressing the female Students, the Soroptimist International Club through her resource persons gave a talk on sex education, raised awareness about the importance and benefits of technology in advancing the potentials of the participants.
In the same vein, the students were also put through interactive session on Menstrual Hygiene.
120 participants, selected from JSS3 to SSS3 classes participated and benefitted from the programme.
However, gift items were distributed to participants at the end of the programme ranging from sanitary Pads, toilet soaps, etc
