Profiling the ‘MARK’ of Effective Representation

Rt. Hon. Mark Esset belongs to a rare class of pragmatic gentlemen who have sweetly blended individual success with service and excellence.Mark was born on the 21st of August, 1972 to the family of Pastor & Mrs. Udo Okon Esset of Ibakang Nsit Village in Nsit Atai Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. A family where service to humanity and good nurturing remains an entrenched family credo and value.

He grew through the elementary and secondary stages of education attending Government Primary School, Uya Oro, Oron Local Government Area, where he obtained his First School Leaving Certificate (FSLC), he had a very brief stint at the Methodist Senior Science College, Oron, before he proceeded to the prestigious Federal Government College, Ikot Ekpene were he acquired his West African Examination Council (WAEC) Certificate.

Mark Esset bagged a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) Degree in Business Education and a Masters Degree(M.Sc) in Public Administration, both from the University of Calabar, Calabar.

In the course of his undergraduate/Post Graduate studies, Mark Esset displayed excellent understanding of human cravings, humility, patience and deep seated wisdom which are prerequisites for good and purposeful leadership in any sane society.

Vested with the deep academic knowledge of Business Management, Rt. Hon. Mark Esset ventured into Petroleum Marketing Business. His due diligence, effective service delivery, proficiency and core competency to business enhanced his meteoric rise to the position of the M/D of EM-SSET NIG. LTD – A Petroleum Marketing Consortium (a position he had to relinquish because of his desire to serve his people effectively).

Conscious of the time tested advice of Abraham Lincoln: “Man owes humanity without question to leave every environment better than he met it”, Rt. Hon. (Elder) Mark Udo Esset set out to affect mankind positively. In 2011, with the profound grace of God upon his life, he was appointed the Transition Committee Chairman of Nsit Atai Local Government Council. His effective and transparent leadership qualities within the 12 months at the helms of affairs as the Transition Committee Chairman necessitated the good people of Nsit Atai Local Government Area to massively elect him as the Executive Chairman in 2012.

Rt. Hon. Mark Esset strictly adhered to the postulation of John Fitzgerald Kennedy that “our task is not to fix the blame for the past, but to fix the course for the future”. He aspired to represent the good people of Nsit Atai State Constituency in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, and on April 11th 2015, got an overwhelming victory as Member – elect for Nsit Atai State Constituency in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly. He was sworn-in as the Honorable Member at the inauguration of the Sixth Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly on the 8th of June, 2015.

After the inauguration, He was appointed by the leadership of the House as the Chairman, House Committee on Agriculture and Natural Resources. Later he was the Chairman, House Committee on Commerce, Industry and Tourism; Chairman House Committee on Boundary, Peace and Conflict Resolution and Chairman House Committee on Health.

Rt. Hon. Mark Esset’s Mission in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly is ‘to make laws that will better the life of Akwa Ibom persons; Oversight in ensuring that the actions of the Executive is in line with laid down rules & Good representation of his constituency in attracting socio-economic benefits to them’. In his first term, he delivered on his Mission Statement and still following up the pace.

Occasioned by a superlative performance in his first four years as the representative of his people in the House of Assembly, his constituents collectively accepted that he should make a return by craving…’LET THE GOOD WORK CONTINUE beyond 2019′!

Mark braved the odds, recontested to represent his Constituents and got overwhelmingly reelected for a 2nd term of 4 years on Saturday 9th March, 2019 elections, thus making him a Jinx Breaker – the first House of Assembly Member representing Nsit Atai State Constituency getting successfully reelected for a 2nd term.

Conscious of the fact that he owes his constituents nay Akwa Ibom State a robust representation, the 7th Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly was inaugurated on the 9th of June, 2019 and subsequently, Mark Esset was appointed the Chairman, House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

He has carried out his oversight functions creditably well even to the applause of few naysayers. Worthy of mention is the oversight tour of of all the 31 Local Government Councils to have a first hand and  on the spot assessment of the challenges, projects, initiatives and achievements and limitation(s) of the different Council Bosses.

Rt. Hon. Mark Esset’s areas of Political interests include but not limited to youth empowerment through vocational training, business setups and political appointments. He is also known for galvanizing all political frontiers, stabilizing the polity, embarking on several life enhancement and life transforming programmes, youth mobilization, ensuring peaceful coexistence of his constituency etc. – to say the least, he masterminded the ‘unifying factors’ that has made Nsit Atai Local Government Area to assume the sobriquet – ‘CENTRE OF UNITY’.

Rt. Hon. Mark Esset has distinguished himself with deserving meritorious Awards & Honours:

• An Award of Honour in recognition of his excellent and outstanding representation in the 6th/7th AKHA by Students Union Government(SUG), Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Ekpene.

• An Award of Honour as the Eti-Ette Iberedem Ndito Ufoknwed by Nsit Atai Students Association of Nigeria (NASAN), Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic Chapter.

• An Award of ‘Icon of Immense Value’ by Philanthropist World, Abuja.

• Patron, Nsit Atai Students Association of Nigeria(NASAN), Worldwide.

• Grand Patron of numerous Socio -Cultural & Socio-Political Organizations.

• Award of Recognition by diverse religious group.

• Award of Excellence by the Nsit Atai Traditional Rulers Council on Effective Representation.

• Award of an Ambassador of Light by The Apostolic Church of Nigeria.

• Best Performing Legislative Personality of the Year by Akwa Ibom State Advancement Awards 2019.

Rt. Hon. (Elder) Mark Udo Esset is an ordained Elder of The Apostolic Church, an epitome of humility who is dedicated to the cause of his Constituents and has embarked on several life enhancements and life transforming programmes in his State Constituency.

His hobbies include commitment to Church programmes and activities, Reading, Playing Football, etc.

This erudite legislator is happily married to an amiable, humble, soft-spoken and God fearing wife, Mrs. Dorcas Mark Esset and the union is blessed with four children.

In his avowed desire to continually dole out EFFECTIVE AND PROACTIVE REPRESENTATION to his constituents. Rt. Hon. Mark Udo Esset made a sincere pledge to his constituents :-
“I pledge to Nsit Atai Local Government, my Constituency. To continue to give Effective Representation beyond 2019 and to ensure that the dividends of Democracy are felt in the Local Government. So help me God. ”
