The political substitution in Edo State: setting a new precedent for a new political perspective in Edo State.
It is no longer news that Edo State of recent has been in the political discourse in the country as the state has witnessed what pundits called power tussle between an estranged political godfather, Adams Oshiomhole and his godson, Godwin Obaseki
which is fanned by political Substitution in Edo State.
Their disagreement and inability to shift ground for peace to reign in Edo State have caused the former National Chairman of All Progressive Congress (APC) Adams Oshiomhole
to lost his exalted position to a Caretaker Committee while Obaseki on the other hand have exited from the party after he was disqualified by the Screening Committee to seek second term mandate from the main opposition, Peoples Democratic Party.
What will remain a precedent in the political lexicon in the country is for Governor Godwin Obaseki who in 2017 governorship election in Edo State contested under the All Progressives Congress, to swap his gubernatorial mandate with his rival and PDP Governorship Candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, which many perceived as the motive behind the political Substitution in Edo State.
Political Substitution in Edo State Has Caused Many To Cross Carpet To Other Political Party (ies)
As the battle on who should emerge the next governor of Edo State
in the September 19 governorship election continues, both political gladiators have shifted their camps by changing their political affiliation to wrestle power against each other.
While the suspended National Chairman of APC, Adams Oshiomhole has adopted Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu to fly APC ticket, governor Godwin Obaseki a fortnight ago won PDP Governorship Ticket after other PDP Governorship Aspirants stepped down for him.
Remember, it was not an easy ride for Godwin Obaseki.
Few days after he was screened out by the APC Governorship Screening Committee, he toured the South South states visiting some PDP governors including Rivers State, Nyesom Wike and his Akwa Ibom State counterpart, Udom Emmanuel on a wider consultation before he finally defected to the PDP.
A political move, many perceived as the game changer which is the undertone for the ongoing political Substitution in Edo State
South- South Peoples Democratic party (PDP) Governors encouraged Mr. Godwin Obaseki to join PDP
The party which has the South South as its stronghold didn’t wait a minute to give Obaseki a waiver and persuaded on other contestants to stepped down for him.
It will be recalled that Edo State has been the only APC state in the entire South South after the tenure of Professor Oserheimen Osunbor was invalidated by Edo State Governorship Election Tribunal, and asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to withdraw his certificate and declare Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole of the Action Congress (AC) party, the winner.
On November 11, 2008, a Federal Appeal Court sitting in Benin City upheld the ruling of the state’s elections petitions tribunal, declaring Oshiomhole to be the Governor of Edo State.
The decision was based on several voting irregularities.
South-South Governors Congratulate Governor Obaseki for Joining PDP, and for clinching the Party’s ticket
Meanwhile, Governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Friday congratulated their Edo state counterpart, Godwin Obaseki, for emerging the governorship candidate of the party in the September 19 governorship election.
In a letter of congratulations, the chairman of the PDP Governors Forum, Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, congratulated Governor Obaseki on his emergence as the flagbearer of the PDP in the Edo State governorship election, scheduled for September 2020.
Tambuwal in the letter signed by the Director General of the PDP governors forum, C.I.D Maduabum, said that Obaseki’s victory in the primaries was an affirmation of the confidence the people of Edo State had in his ability to steer the ship of Edo State positively for another four years and on the record of his sterling performance in office in his current term.
According to Tambueal, “This victory should be a humbling one as it has been achieved on the backdrop of a grave injustice done to him by his former Political party, the APC, and a demonstration of the role of God in the affairs of men.
It is indeed a call to continue faithfully serving the good people of Edo State”, the chairman of PDP governors’ Forum said.
Tambuwal said that the victory was even more remarkable as Obaseki joined the PDP just a few weeks ago, and it was a testament to his leadership skills that he successfully got all other aspirants who started the race before him in PDP to step down for him and join him in salvaging the state without rancour or bitterness.
“We hope that he will continue to deploy this management skill in uniting the PDP and Edo people in the great task of enthroning good governance and accountability in Edo State. He should ensure that there are truly no victors or vanquished in this struggle for the soul of Edo State”, Tambuwal tasked Obaseki.
Tambuwal believes Obsaeki’s Victory At The Primary Will stem The Tide Of Political Substitution in Edo State
The Sokoto State governor said the PDP governors were grateful to the leadership of the PDP, particularly, the National Working Committee, under the National Chairman, Chief Uche Secondus.
Adding that the constructive and supporting role played by the Edo State chapter of the PDP and the rank and file members of the party, for their exceptional conflict resolution mechanism and cooperation employed to achieve the seamless rancour – free outcome of the primaries.
According to him, “This sets the stage for a resounding victory for PDP in September”, as the PDP has demonstrated with this outing in Edo State, that it has learnt the lessons of the past and is poised to elevate the PDP platform as one that can offer stable and focused leadership for Nigeria.
He said that the huge task of winning the Edo State election has just begun, and counseled Obaseki to run an issue based campaign, anchored on his highly acclaimed record of superlative performance in office so far.
The chairman of the PDP governors forum admonished all organs of state such as the security agencies and the Independent National Electoral Commission, to ensure a free and fair election in Edo state in September.
Tambuwal urged Nigerians and the Civil society to be vigilant to ensure that all votes are counted and that all votes count in Edo State in September.
APC on the other hand have assured Nigerians that Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu will win Edo State. Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello gave the assurance yesterday when he appeared on Politics Today on Channels Television.
He reiterated commitment of President Muhammadu Buhari, Progressives Governors and the entire APC to rally around Ize-Iyamu to ensure that he win the election convincingly.
The big task is how Comrade Adams Oshiomhole who has lost his exalted position as National Chairman of APC
few weeks to the election with the lingering political Substitution in Edo in the party will deliver his new found political godson, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu.
A man he once said is not qualified to be the Governor of Edo State based on his past antecedents with PDP led government after serving as Chief of Staff to Lucky Igbinedion before his elevation to Secretary to State Government.
Nigerians are waiting anxiously to witness how the swapping of political party with the same aspiration will help these two political rivals to achieve their political ambition even as political Substitution in Edo State keeps taking new shape every passing day.
