The State Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Akwa Ibom State Council, Comrade Amos Etuk has reaffirmed the commitment of Akwa Ibom Journalists adhering strictly to ethical practices while propagating the State to the globe in their reportage as active partners in the development and progress of the State.
Comrade Etuk who is also the Editor-in-chief of Daily News Wire Newspaper stated this in his remarks during the just concluded media meet with the executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Udom Emmanuel at Banquet hall, Government House, in Uyo.
“We had to painstakingly carryout this exercise to rid our ranks of quarks and pretenders to our profession, who had in the past cast a shameful pall on our profession by their unethical reportage and irredeemable descent to outright falsehood and tendencies unbecoming of our noble profession.
“Your Excellency, we intend to stick with this number in all our activities, including media chats with you and officials of government. This will give us the latitude to check our output and name and shame any journalist within our ranks that goes out of our professional ethics.
“We in the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Akwa Ibom State Council, shall continue to partner your Excellency and your government to ensure that your completion agenda is fully realised. We are aware of the onerous responsibility entrusted to the media by the constitution of our country, we pledge to carryout that watchdogs responsibility with a high sense of professionalism and responsibility.
“We have resolved in this new NUJ administration to insist on journalism guided by ethical standards and professional conduct.
“To achieve professional decorum, Your Excellency, we have come out with a compendium of registered journalists in the State, the first by any state Council in Nigeria. From a nebulous and indeterminate number, we are happy to announce that we have a compendium of 497 qualified and practising journalists in the State” He elucidated.
While congratulating the Governor and his lieutenants on the 32nd anniversary of the State, he seized the opportunity and sincerely appreciated Governor Emmanuel for approving/ immediate implementation of Health Insurance scheme for 250 practicing journalists in the State.
The NUJ boss observed that the scheme is the first of its kind the history of the union across the country.
“We register our appreciation to Your Excellency for the recently launched Health Insurance Scheme for journalists in the State. Your Excellency’s intervention in this area, coming at a time we have lost about three journalists in quick succession to treatable conditions, is a welcome development. It is the first of its kind anywhere in Nigeria and we are eternally grateful to Your Excellency”. He lauded.
The NUJ Chairman also intimated the Governor on the modest feat of his administration and enumerated major pressing needs of the union that shall further enhance effective reportage by Journalists in the State.
“As a new executive, we have hit the road running. We have organised another first of its kind retreat for members of the State Executive Committee at Eket, where resource persons took time to educate our top leaders on leadership and mentorship.
“These themes were chosen in line with our teamwork approach to the new leadership of NUJ in the State. The retreat is just the first in a series of training and retraining programmes we envisage that would shape the ethical and professional journalism we dream for our State.
“We solicit government assistance in these trainings and participation in seminars and conferences nationally and internationally. We have also gone to church to thank God for the new leadership and rededicate our union to God.
“Your Excellency, permit me to present some of our immediate challenges and seek your fatherly assistance to overcome them. Number one on our list is the completion of the two story office complex at the NUJ secretariat.
“We plead with Your Excellency to intervene in the completion of the edifice, which will make Akwa Ibom State the best secretariat in the country. We also request for more buses for our Chapels and other bodies such as NAWOJ and SWAN. In addition sir, we request for bette working tools like laptops, midgets, etc.
“Your Excellency, we plead, most especially, for an official car for the Chairman of the State Council to enable him function optimally”. NUJ chairman informed.
He however, appreciated Governor Emmanuel over the reappointment of Mr. Charles Udoh as the Honourable Commissioner for Information and Strategy and Mr. Ekerete Udoh as Chief Press Secretary. And also thanked him for the appointment of Prince Emmanuel Sam as SA on Local Media and pledged the Union’s NUJ support to the appointees in the discharge of their duties to the State.
