Lawmaker Tasks Journalists on Ethical Compliance

Journalists in Akwa Ibom State have been charged on ethical compliance/adherence in their reportage for enhancement of growth, progress and development of the State.

The member representing Onna State Constituency/Deputy Chief of the House, Rt. Hon. (Otuekong) Nse Essien  gave the charge during the inaugural press briefing of the Seventh Assembly, Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly organised by the House Committee on Information.

Hon. Essien who is memebr of the Committee, during interative session of the meet frowned at the rampant unethical reportage by some disgruntled elements within journalism profession in the State.

The Onna lawmaker reasoned that for media professionals to remain active/ reliable partners in driving the developmental strides of the State, strict adherence to code of ethics must by paramount while discharging duties.

The assemblyman further stated that sensitization of non-professionals from the referred profession is pertinet as the polity is in dire need of a society where journalististic practices are guided by its canons of truthfulness, accuracy objectivity, impartiality and right fact gathering as the cardinal principle of practice.

He called on leaders of Nigeria Union of Journalists at the State and Chapel levels to as a matter of need streamline and spell out the disparity between citizenship journalism from mainstream journalism practices as fourth estate of the realm.

Hon. Essien also pledged the readiness of the seventh Assembly to partner effectively with the press community in the State for a robust legislative seesion.

In another development, the Onna Lawmaker has also lauded the leadership and entire members of Consolidated chapel, Nigeria Union of Journalists, Akwa Ibom State Council over a successful Chapel week outing, last weekend.

Hon. Essien was a recipient of Legislative distinguished award during the gala/award night of the Chapel last Friday, at the NUJ Press Centre, Uyo, one of the activities that marked the justed concluded chapel week ceremonies.

Represented by his Legislative Aide, Barr. Linus Ukpong, Essien embraced the award as a spur for more directional, efficient and purposeful representation to his people.
