As the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Akwa Ibom State holds her 8th Quadrennial Delegates Conference/Elections tomorrow, Thursday, April 25, 2019, four labour unionists are jostling to emerge Chairman of the NLC in the State.
According to the Acting Chairperson of Nigeria Labour Congress and Conference Chairman, Comrade Paulina Issac, the election for who takes over as the leadership of Nigeria Labour Congress in the State will be keenly contested.
She mentioned the four candidates screened for the election to include a Vice Chairman of the Congress, Comrade Nsima Etukudoh, Comrade Ime Akpadiaha from the Ministry of Agriculture, Michael Ukonyanh a past Auditor of the Congress and Comrade Sunny James who has served Nigeria Labour Congress as Administrative Secretary.
She added that six persons are contesting for the office of the Vice Chairmen, seven for Auditor and six women vying for the office of Ex-officio.
Comrade Isaac pointed out that for the leadership positions to be keenly contested by those she described as credible men offers indication to the importance workers attach to issues of labour.
While assuring that arrangement has been put in place for a successful conference, the Chairperson restated the commitment of her committee to provide a level playing field for all candidates who wish to be elected as members of the new executive council of Nigeria Labour Congress to man it’s affairs for the next four years.
She commended the outgoing leadership of Nigeria Labour Congress in the State for a peaceful transition process.
The Acting Chairperson insisted that this year’s 8th Quadrennial Delegates Conference of Nigeria Labour Congress, slated for Thursday April 25, 2019 at 10am at Ibom Hall, IBB Way, Uyo will not witness any form of imposition or external influences which she said may be targeted at truncating the right of Akwa Ibom workers to freely choose their leaders during the conference.
Comrade Isaac called on accredited voters to avail themselves at the conference and elect a leader they believe will lead the congress to a height worthy to be reckoned with.
She offered insight to the fact that the Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Udom Emmanuel will grace the conference as Special Guest of Honour, and will be in company of members of the State Executive Council.
Others expected are former Nigeria Labour Congress Chairperson in the state, who is presently the leader of Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Udo Kierien Akpan, the State Commissioner for Economic Development, Labour and Manpower Planning, Rt. Hon Ekong Sampson as well as the Head of Civil Service, Akwa Ibom State, Mrs. Ekereobong Akpan.
