Inspite of the harelded ongoing waste evacuation interveniton exercise by Akwa Ibom State Environmental Protection and Waste Management Agency (AKSEPWMA) led by theChairman, Prince Ikim, some resource persons and contractors are exuding lackadaisical and aloof attitudes toward their duties.
Prince Ikim, Chairman Akwa Ibom State Environmental Protection and Waste Management Agency observed recently during an unofficial hour inspection
of major dump sites along Edet Akpan Avenue (Four Lanes), Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
The Chairman Akwa Ibom State Environmental Protection and Waste management expressed displeasure that despite all the warnings charging all contractors handling waste evacuation and distilling of drains in Uyo on diligence or risk suspention panelty, most of them are still found wanting in the discharge of duties.
“Sincerely speaking, the contractors are not doing their jobs efficiently, as you can see, the drians are supposed to be distilled but reverse is the case here.
“What we are doing is inspecting and evaluating the commitment, efficiency and effectiveness of each contractor in their various waste locations and i can assure you defaulting contractors shall be dropped at the expiration of their first contract.
“We have put a notice across to all contractors mandating every resource persons to be on sites but seeing all these is very shocking and surprising and I see this as a clear act of insubordination and playing games with environmental safety and human health and we have zero tolerance for such distarded attitude”. Prince Ikim condemned.
At one of the legal dump sites along Edet Akpan Avenue by High Tension Road, Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State Environmental Protection and Waste Management Agency boss informed Readersa24/7 Crew that the inspection exercise and operation zero tolerance on indiscrimate wastes disposal in the State came on the heels of complaints from residents and groups on the mounting heaps of refuse on street corners, road medians and blocked drains across the State.
“At Akwa Ibom State Environmental Protection and Waste management Agency, we are not ready to play politics with the welbeing and health of Akwa Ibom citizens and other sojourners. That is why we are all here on the street inspecting the areas that were given to people to distil and to the true sense of it, most contractors and resource persons are not doing their jobs, so we will stop at nothing to suspend them where applicable.” He threatened!
…..towards a clean and safe Akwa Ibom: A Sustainable Exercise
As expected, the Chairman, Akwa Ibom State Environmental Protection and Waste Management Agency has assured citizens that the agency is not relented in the drive to rid the streets of refuse.
“It is going to be a sustained efforts. We are putting contractors and resource persons on their toes because you cannot get money for jobs not done and their contracts expires October 2019. As for companies who have done well, we will renew their contracts but for those that didn’t impress us despite our push and needed motivation, most epecically in the area of waste evacuation we will let them go” He reaffirmed.
An Envisaged Uyo, Akwa Ibom State
Prince Ikim, Chairman Akwa Ibom State Environmental Protection and Waste Management Agency dislosed that as at date, 250 receptacle bins have been supplied by a consultant working in collaboration with the Agency for the successful accomplishment of the programme.
He added that plans are on top gear towards flagging off house-to-house waste disposal exercise within the major housing estates in the State with a subsequent spread across the entire State as part of the Agency’s vision toward ensuring good sanitary conditions and environmental wellbeing for the people.
Prince Ikim said, the house-to-house waste disposal exercise will be carried out 2 to 3 times a week within a household in the State.
He assured that in the next few months, impact of the Agency shall be greatly felt as Akwa Ibom State shall soon become a destination of choice for both local and foriegn investors thanks to its serenity.
“I want uyo/Akwa Ibom State to replicate calabar of the days of Governor Donald Luke. we are looking at a serene uyo where indiscriminate dumping of waste and illegal waste sites shall be a thing of the past and we are getting there very soon”. He assured!
Akwa Ibom State Environmental Protection and Waste Management Agency, A Legal Entity
Prince Ikim, Chairman, Akwa Ibom State Environmental Protection and Waste Management Agency enlightened that the “Agency was established by Law in 2007 to operate directly under and be supervised by the Office of the Governor.
The Chairman further said, the Agency is not working under the Ministry of Environment and Mineral Resources but is enjoying a robust partnership with the Ministry”
He further informed that; “Part one of the Law called Akwa Ibom State Environmental Protection and Waste Management Agency Cap 47 2000, the Law spells out the functions and duties of the agency. I will urge whoever is perplexed or in doubt to lay hands on a copy of the Law and get aquinted with the compositions of the Agency.
“The agency is directly under the supervision of the Governor and in section 6&7 you see the fuctions and duties of the agency.
“The agency is born out of law. What we are doing is legal and we are following the law to the later. There is nothing like the Agency usurping the duties and functions of Ministry of Enviromnent and Mineral Resources and vis a visa”. He elucidated.
Call it a multi-faceted Agency or what have you, Akwa Ibom State Environmental Protection and Waste Management Agency under the able watch of Prince Ikim is up to its games of tackling waste management, evacution and other related matters in the State with a legal framework to lay the required foundation for a fast growing city like ours.
