If daily pains, agony, disappointments and travel of motorists, commuters and pedestrians along the Federal Government long abandoned Calabar Itu HighWay were to be musical rendition, Nigerians would have been tired of the acts and lyrics.
Constructed in the 70s, It is no longer news that the All Progressive Congress (APC ) led Federal Government has not only stopped work but abandoned the Dualization work on the popular multi- billion-naira Calabar Itu/Ikot Ekpene Federal HighWay linking Akwa and Cross River States.
Captured; Dualization of Odukpani-Itu (spur Ididep Itam) Ikot Ekpene road, the road is currently in a horrible state as the bridge at the natural boundary between Akwa Ibom and Cross river States is at the verge of collapsing.
Needless to say that APC led Federal Government tricked South Southerners Akwa Ibom And Cross River States in particular with an unfulfilled promise of constructing the road in exchange for votes in the last presidential election.
Going further to lace its lies with a make-believe false road project to the Akwa Ibom and Cross River States, Federal Government temporarily awarded the road contract to Julius Berger Nigeria PLC and Design Construct Ltd as supervising consultant at the cost of N56b with the promise of completion within four years interval.
But surprisingly enough, the project site has been completely shut down in April after the Presidential election early this year and construction equipment moved from the site.
Described the road as a time bomb awaiting detonation, you won’t be out of place as commuters, motorists recount fresh agonies on daily basis.
The inability of the Federal Government to construct the road, is presenting enormous economic and social challenges to the people.
Now, with the presence of rain, gallop and potholes worsen the condition of the road and it is believed the intermediary job done by Julius Berger has added to the travel of commuters.
Hand in hand with this is that a greater portion of the road has been riddled by potholes and gallops caused by hundreds of heavy duty vehicles and other utility cars that ply the road, daily.
The Calabar Itu HighWay is sadly akin to a death trap as major parts of the road are in great despair.
Presently, this road that used to witness free flow of traffic in the 70s is riddled with large craters potholes that vehicles including heavy duties have to go on a snail speed if they must evade accident and continue their journey
With that in mind, a more worrisome development worsening the plight of the road users, emanates from scavenging gallops making the road impassable especially during this raining season, and as we move into the peak of rains, one can only stop to ponder; what becomes the stead of the road users.
Unfortunately, matters have gone bad that travelling from Akwa Ibom to Cross Rivers State, a distance of one hour and some minutes now takes over two hours .
These days, commuters and motorists at times stand still for over two to three hours on Calabar Itu HighWay thanks to heavy gridlock occasioned by the impassable nature of the road.
We have in good authority that the road is recording more accidents and uncountable deaths than before its abandonment by the Federal Government.
Notably, during the just concluded electioneering campaigns, the APC led Federal Government promised constructing a dual carriage way on the road, but the Federal Government, through our very own, the immediate past Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari, Sen. Ita Enang lied to the people of Akwa Ibom and the Cross River States
The question now is, has Calabar Itu HighWay also gone the way of many Federal Government’s abandoned roads scattered all over the Country? What is the fate of motorists and commuters whose source of livelihood depends on the infamous road!
It is pertinent Federal Government acknowledge the fact that the hanging part of the bridge at the boundary between Akwa Ibom and Cross Rivers State may caved in at any time and if this happens, not only will people lose their sources of livelihood but human lives shall also go down the drain.
