A bill for a Law to establish Akwa Ibom State School of Health Technology for Training of Various Health Professionals in the State and for other matters connected therewith has passed second reading on the floor of the House during its last plenary session.
The bill which has Rt. Hon. (Barr.) Aniefiok Dennis as the lead sponsor is co-sponsored by fifteen (15) other members of the House.
Divided into seven parts, according to the lead sponsor of the bill during deliberations, the seven distinctive parts of the bill are: Establishment and Functions of the Institution, Establishment of Council and other Organs, Senior and Junior Staff Committees, Appointment of Principal Staff, Discipline of Students, Financial Provisions and Miscellaneous Provisions.
Barr. Dennis further disclosed that among other things the bill seeks to enhance upgrading the status of the institution for the benefit of the State and its citizenry.
The Etinan Lawmaker assured that the bill when passed shall enhance expansion of the Institution both in scope and value, adding that with new courses offered, certificates obtained from the Institution will be recognized beyond the shores of the State.
He also said that upgrading the institution shall equality it for participation in the National youth service scheme and attract counterpart funding from various donor agencies like TETFUND.
He further emphasized that with the massive investment by Governor Udom Emmanuel’s administration in the health sector, the college, when upgraded will offer courses of study, training, research and development of techniques in all branches of health care delivery to include Biomedical Engineering, Dental Technology, Health Information Management, Radiography, Optometry among other professional health courses to complement the state government’s infrastructures in the health sector.
It could be recalled that this bill having previously been passed by the 3rd, 5th and 6th assemblies was yet to be assented to.
On this heels, lawmakers of the 7th assembly overwhelmingly throw their support behind the bill with emphasis that its timing is apt for assent considering the passion His Excellency the Governor has for the health and well being of Akwa Ibom People.
