The member representing Etinan State Constituency in the State House, Deputy Leader and lead sponsor of the bill, Rt. Hon. (Barr.) Aniefiok Dennis stated this while interacting with some members of the Assembly press corps in his office immediately after Thursday plenary of the House where the bill was read the second time.
Itemising some of the benefits of the bill when passed into law, the lead sponsor disclosed that the bill seeks to stop rape against women and men irrespective of age and status as there must be a need for an explicit consent among parties before any sexual intercourse.
He further stated that the bill addresses issues of domestic abuse of women and children and abuse of any kind against vulnerable persons, stalking, and other related criminal offence.
Also, he stated among other things that the bill when passed will address issues pertaining to women genital mutilation, a harmful practice, highly detrimental to the well being of women.
He further noted that the bill will protect widows from unnecessary maltreatment by the late husband’s relatives and disinheritance of the late husband’s properties among others.
