Ahead of the March 9, 2019 Governorship and State House of Assembly Elections in Akwa Ibom State, the All Progressive Congress in the State may have given up hope of winning the mission to the Hill Top Mansion as the Party on Wednesday at a meeting of its caucus expressed worry and uncertainty that they will once again suffer another round of defeat at the polls.
The latest State of disarray in the APC in Akwa Ibom State according to investigations by Daily News Wire stems from the poor outing of the Party and landslide loss during the Presidential and National Assembly elections held last weekend.
The Party leadership which met on Wednesday were livid in rage on the outcome of the polls and the humiliation which they feared may have swayed their supporters to dump the Party.
The APC leaders expressed concern that the outcome of the elections clearly showed that the Party was not on ground in Akwa Ibom State as they lost all three Senatorial District elections and ten Federal house of Representatives seats to the ruling Peoples Democratic Party.
The APC which had banked on the so called federal might power to intimidate and maim Akwa Ibom People met the superior resilience of the people at the various units as the Party was roundly rejected and the so called federal might failed woefully.
The Party leaders also expressed fears that they had lost their political grip of their bases as none of them was able to deliver their Local Government Areas to the Party.
In Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District, the monumental loss of Senator Godswill Akpabio was the biggest shocker to the Party as the desperate attempt by the former Senate Minority Leader to save face with defeat staring glaringly at him failed as he was overwhelmingly ousted by Engr. (Dr.) Christopher Ekpenyong, a former Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State.
The loss of Godswill Akpabio sent shock waves across the country as he was humiliated by the electorates whom he bestially tried to harass, intimidate and maim to seek a second term.
That loss set so much uneasy calm in the folds of the APC across Nigeria as Akpabio failed to deliver all the set targets given to him to deliver Akwa Ibom State and the South South Region to the APC.
In Ikot Abasi Local Government Area, Mr. Nsima Ekere, the candidate of the APC in the March 9, 2019 Governorship elections was humiliated in his Ward and Local Government as he lost.
In Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area, Senator Ita Enang, the Director General of the APC Governorship campaign lost his Ward and Local Government Area while Otuekong Don Etiebet in Oruk Anam also failed to deliver his Party.
At Obot Akara, Abom Tony Esu an APC stalwart lost woefully at all levels, while Senator John Udoedehe lost it all in Uyo Local Government Area.
The story of the loss of the APC swept across the 31 Local government Areas despite the billions of Naira pumped in by Nsima Ekere accruing from his stay at the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).
Nsima is once again on the path of losing an election having lost a House of Representatives election on the platform of the Action Congress of Nigeria and also lost the primaries of the Governorship in 2006.
Last Wednesday, the APC tried to put up a brave face after the monumental loss by holding a victory dance for the re-election of President Buhari at their campaign grounds along Edet Akpan Avenue.
The turnout at the event was extremely poor as investigations revealed that most APC supporters stayed away knowing that all the campaign strategies of the Party had failed as the realization that Governor Udom Emmanuel and the Peoples Democratic Party will consolidate on their winning streak on March 9,2019.
Mr. Ukpong Essien from Uruan who spoke with our reporter close to the venue of the rally on Wednesday said the whole rally was a fluke designed to deceive the public as it had become certain that the APC had no strong base in Akwa Ibom State and rather than waste their votes, it will be rather wise to support Governor Emmanuel to win a second term than identify with elements that propagate violence yet have no political base.
‘’ We have seen it all. The Presidential and National Assembly Polls have clearly shown that the APC has no followership in Akwa Ibom State. We have been deceiving ourselves. It is obvious that we have lost it all. This so called victory rally for Buhari is a charade and waste of money. What are we celebrating a man who is far away yet you cannot even win one Local Government or Federal Constituency. It is better to support Governor Udom Emmanuel rather than follow this APC elites without electoral base”, Mr. Ukpong Essien said.
For lady Inyene Andrew from Eket who spoke with our reporter, she is uncertain the Party can win Akwa Ibom State with the results released and feels rather than come out on March 9, the Party should forget about the polls.’
‘’ It is better we forget this election and build towards the next elections. We have failed . The PDP has the momentum. Our supporters have left us the way it is . We have failed once again’’, Mrs. Inyene Andrew said.
It will be recalled that on Wednesday, Mr. Nsima Ekere had misled his supporters and lied to them that he had called President Buhari who said the elections will be cancelled.
PDP is expected to win all 26 State House of Assembly seats and the governorship of Akwa Ibom State.
